Just is

It’s just you

just me

just us

just is

You ask me how I’m doing

And I say “yeah okay”

You ask if I’m well

And I say

“I’m well.”

And you’re well as well

We talk about the weather

“Too much rain in London” you say

I say

“It’s sunnier than I thought this time of year.”

What you don’t ask is

Why didn’t we work?

And what I don’t say is

Why didn’t you try harder?

What you don’t say is

I thought you were too closed off

And what I don’t ask is

What did you do to get me to open up?

What you don’t say is

I could have talked to you for hours

And what I don’t say is

six months is too long to still be unsure

but we don’t say any of this

we just stare at one another

too polite to say the truth

too polite to hurt the other

but what I should have said was

We fought too much

And what you should have said was

I only cared enough to fight

“Well”

I would have said in response,

“That’s not quite the same and you know it.”

but I dont

we dont

we never will

no more fighting

not today

not tomorrow

not again

“I don’t think it’s been sunny,”

you say

bait

I exhale,

“okay.”

It’s just you

just me

just us

just is
